Meth Use Surges Across U.S.

(Winter 2018) After waning on the drug scene, methamphetamine has made a big comeback nationwide. This could be, in part, due to the fact that meth is both less expensive and more potent than it had been. Currently, the drug is manufactured in large quantities by drug cartels in Mexico. This change occurred after U.S. lawmakers restricted the availability of some of meth’s main ingredients such pseudoephedrine, a nonprescription decongestant.

Now the drug cartels are using existing distribution channels for cocaine and heroin to sell their methamphetamine. The resurgent meth is seeping back into the American population, regardless of socioeconomic status or race.
