Canada: Second Country to Legalize Marijuana. What’d They Do to Get Here?

(Winter 2018) Uruguay gave the nod to marijuana in 2013, and Canada, our neighbor to the north, just began recreational marijuana sales in October.

Canadian residents aged 18 or older are now legally permitted to carry approximately one ounce of the substance. They are also entitled to raise as many as four marijuana plants at home and purchase the substance from a provincially-regulated reseller.

Marijuana production and manufacturing will be supervised by the Canadian government, and provincial and local governments will regulate wholesaling and can develop legislation on public consumption.

Initial taxes generated by marijuana sales will go toward addiction research and therapy as well as awareness efforts about the substance.
